Caution / Herbs and Nutritional Supplements

Picture
Caution! Herbs and Nutritional Supplements

What's the problem?
Televised testimonial promotions, as well as advertisements in health and nutrition magazines, aggressively promote the use of herbs and nutritional supplements – frequently without explaining potential dangers or side effects. Nutritional supplements and herbal remedies are readily available in supermarkets, pharmacies, health food stores, and offices of herbal practitioners. The fact that herbs are natural preparations from plants doesn't necessarily mean they are safe. It has been documented for centuries that some plant substances are toxic to the liver. Herbal remedies are presently unregulated by any state or federal medical or health agency, and their safety and effectiveness have not been scientifically demonstrated.

How concerned are doctors?
Doctors are very concerned that many herbal-related liver injuries go unrecognized because patients are often not asked about the use of herbs and diet supplements. Herbal remedies contain multiple ingredients, and the labeled and actual contents of a product may differ. This makes it impossible to identify liver attack rates for specific herbs. In a recent article, Dr. Raymond S. Koff questions the role herbal products play in undefined hepatitis and fulminant (sudden and severe) disease. In almost 50% of patients, fulminant disease cannot be related to any identified hepatitis viruses. Liver injury directly related to repeated use of herbal products ranges from mild and limited to extensive disease. Dr. Koff believes that unrecognized herbal use may be the cause of unidentified hepatitis and cirrhosis.

What herbs may be harmful?
Chaparral has been named as the source of severe hepatitis leading to a liver transplant in a 60-year-old woman. She had taken two capsules of chaparral daily for 10 months. Three weeks before being hospitalized she increased her dose to six capsules daily. This case showed signs similar to three other cases of chaparral related hepatitis although hers was more severe due to the longer period and the amount she had ingested.

In addition, a Chinese herbal product, JinBuHuan, has been implicated in clinically diagnosed hepatitis in seven patients. Other herbs known to be dangerous to the liver include: germander, comfrey, mistletoe, skullcap, margosa oil, mate tea, Gordolobo yerba tea, and pennyroral (squawmint oil). Dr. Koff stresses that "many more may not yet have been recognized."

Are all herbs harmful to the liver?
Not all herbs are a threat to the liver. Some people use Milk Thistle to help maintain liver health. To date, the most reliable, and also very preliminary, studies on people show that Milk Thistle does not cure liver disease, but that it may improve the way the liver works in patients with cirrhosis. However, there is no current evidence to indicate that milk thistle relieves hepatitis symptoms or fights the virus. Other herbs some use to help improve liver function include licorice root and ginseng. To help relieve side effects of interferon therapy, some turn to ginger or St. John's Wort. However, no herbal, diet supplement, or alternative medicines have been scientifically proven to cure – or even ease – symptoms of hepatitis C. Until doctors ask patients about herbal use and have an adequate reporting system whose results are backed by adequate scientific research, the only way to reduce the risk of liver damage is to limit use of herbal products. People with hepatitis have an already compromised liver, and some herbs may be an added stress, increasing liver damage.

Dietary supplements are often part of people’s health regimen. Being healthy includes making wise choices.

This means knowing what goes into your body.

If you take an herb or herbal blend, do you know what you are taking?

This glossary provides information on some popular supplements.

This information is not intended as medical advice or endorsement of the use of dietary supplements. Always talk to your medical provider before taking any herbs or supplements.

All herbs, drugs, and other substances have potential side effects. Allergic reactions have been reported for nearly every herb, sometimes with life-threatening consequences.

If you suspect you are having an allergic reaction or other serious side effect, stop the substance and seek immediate medical advice.

If you have trouble breathing or feel faint, call 911.
If you are scheduled for a medical or surgical procedure, particularly if anesthesia will be used, or plan to undergo chemotherapy, report supplement use to your medical provider.

You may need to stop supplement use for a week or more since many supplements interfere with anesthesia and/or blood clotting.

Alfalfa --

is an alfalfa (Medigado Sativa). This herb is used by many hundreds of years. Is assumed to be useful in diabetes, lower cholesterol and treat arteriosclerosis, although no scientific study does not support these allegations.

Warning: can "connect" the iron, so iron may cause a supraancarcare. HCV patients should be very careful when using this plant. Not recommended in cases of  HCV!

Precautions Use only products that come from companies verified confidence. There are reports of two deaths whilst using the Lucerne, which was infected with bacteria, arsenic and other unsafe substances. It has mild gastrointestinal side effects. Are also found skin irritation, urticaria, red spots and skin sensitivity to sunlight. It is recommended to use the plant very carefully in cases of diabetes and hypoglycaemia. Thyroid levels can rise and fall caliumului level. Not recommended for people using blood thinning drugs for (warfarin).

Lucerne is not standardized and no standard dosages.

Aloe Vera --

(Aloe vera) gel used especially as today is thousands of years used. It is assumed that aloe vera is useful in cases of skin diseases like eczema, psoriasis and genital herpes. Although often used in cases of burns or injury, scientific research confirms this view. In fact in cases of injury or surgery, aloe vera can delayed healing. In Germany, aloe vera is permissible only laxative! And in the United States Food and Drug Commission warns that even as a laxative is safe!

Warning: Internal use (oral) of aloe vera can cause inflammation of the liver, And can increase transaminases. And substances that penetrate the skin come, sooner or later, all the live!

Precautions : I found the skin redness and irritation. When used orally as a laxative, may cause abdominal cramps. Not recommended for use in cases of oral history of the intestine as eg Crohn's disease, colitis, inflammation of the appendix, abdominal pain. Should be used with caution in patients with Diabetes, hypoglycemia, heart, kidney, gastrointestinal problems. Not recommended for long-term use or prior to administration of injections. Not recommended for oral use in pregnant and after birth. Do not use with other laxatives, medicines for heart hypoglycaemic agents. There are very few products that are standardized aloe vera!

Anise --

German: Fenchel-engl .= = Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare), anise is used as food and is generally safe. It is generally used in cases of upset stomach, particularly in children from colic. The therapy is used both as seeds and oil of anise. It is approved by the European Commission as a remedy gasto-intestinal health.

Armurariu --

(Sylibum marianum) germ = Mariendiestel, engl = milk thistle. Was studied more precisely because they are assumed to have beneficial effects on the liver. But towards HCV are very few studies. Evidence supporting these assumptions are weak. However the European Commission acknowledged health armurariu extract (Silimarina) for inflammation and cirrhosis. However it is significant that all The European Commission rejected the same classification of "substance that maintains liver health and function ". Armurariu extract three components are of interest in liver diseases: silibinum, silychristin and silydianin, which is mainly known as Silymarin.

Warning: -decreases liver (transaminases).

Precautions - If used according to standard dosages, side effects mild, such as stomach, skin irritation and decreased glucose. Silimarina has the ability to interact with other medicines, hormones, methadone, antibiotics, antihistamines, antipsychotics, sleeping pills.

Artichokes --

(Cynara scolymus) is a plant that is approved by the European Commission as a remedy against indigestion. Often associated with a hepato-protective. There is no scientific evidence to confirm or not the quality of the article. No ability to reduce lipid is not proven.

Warning: Do not use in cases of biliary tract jam! Arugula is avoided and the fact that affects the speed of blood clotting.

Precautions : Relatively safe in short-term use. Use with caution in cases of allergies and asthma. Do not use in cases of blockage of the biliary tract or bile stones and kidney disease. Found skin irritation and asthma, impaired breathing, cough, flatulence, diarrhea, nausea, impaired kidney functioning. Dosages are not standardized.

Astragalus --

(Astragalus membranaceus) is a plant widely used in traditional Chinese medicine, often mixed with other plants. It is accepted by some committees as dietary supplements. Are assumed to have positive effects on the immune system and antiviral. In Chinese medicine is often used as a remedy for a. chronic infections (not for the acute!) The research could not confirm or refute these alleged qualities of astragalus site.

Warning: Do not use during therapy with Interferon! In cases of autoimmune hepatitis, cirrhosis primary gallbladder, or other autoimmune diseases is not recommended!

Precautions : Beware, because there are several kinds of astragalus. Use only version astragalus membranaceus! Do not use during acute infection! Avoid in patients with reduced blood clotting factor. Use with caution if diabetes, and treatments with growth hormones. Pulling a substance found in the astragalus, can block the absorption of other substances! Therefore astragalus is not recommended in combination with other medicines or therapies? Dosage is not established!

Black Cohosh --

(Cimicifuga racemosa) or black cohoş. This plant is supported by the European Commission to remedy the pre-menstrual periods, periods of pain (in women) and during transition to menopause. Note that there are cohoş blue, which is not the same with the black! Not to be confused with each other.

Warning: There are at least 5 reports directly related to hepatitis, liver complications showing, going as far to suckling liver function , Which required liver transplantation in two cases! In those cases were used different combinations of plants, which included black and cohoş.

Precautions : Not particularly in women with metastatic breast cancer, and in cases of tromboembolii. Prohibited during pregnancy in women. Dosage not established.

Boswellia carterii --

African incense. A relatively new product homeopathic market. It speculates to have special qualities in cases of inflammation, allergies, rheumatism, psoriasis, asthma, and cancer by inhibiting TNF (tumor-necrosis-factor). It is considered as a good substitute for cortisone.

Warning: - Preparations of African incense are not accepted as medicines in Germany, could not be taken as evidence of the effectiveness of this product yet.

Precautions - So far there are only very few serious studies on the incense, and that could somehow be at least part of the alleged beneficial effects. Positive, but minor, were obtained only in cases where the doses of incense have been substantially increased. It proved so in fact, small doses are just the reverse effect, namely to stimulate the formation of leucotrine, and thereby to aggravate inflammation. Other problematic side effects are caused by 3-oxo-tirocalacid substance, which is also contained in the African incense.

Capsicum --

(Cayenne, Spanish pepper) - (Capsicum frutescens Şu Capsicum annuum). Capsaicin, the active ingredient of the pepper (pepper) is assumed to have

an anti-inflammatory, which has an effect on reducing pain and inflammation that. In Germany it is approved as soothing the pain for various diseases as eg. arthritis or pain Sist. nervous.

Warning: - Seems to have the effect of decreasing the transaminases. So can "falsify" the real situation, test values.

Precautions - Has not come into contact with eyes, for cause burns. Other side effects were gastrointestinal distress, sweating. It is contraindicated for administration of drugs for lowering high blood tension. As recommendations for the administration: to recommend its use only for 2 days, 14 days after the break, for a use causes permanent nervous system damage.

Green Tea --

(Kamelia sinensis). Green tea is used by hundreds of years. A source of antioxidants. Contains caffeine. It is used to prevent cancer, and in a long series of other problems, but there is no scientific evidence to confirm these allegations. Caffeine may help if fatigue or headaches.

Warning: - Patients with advanced liver disease are advised Decaf Green Tea, due to problems of absorption and processing of caffeine. Coagulation factor may decrease.

Precautions - Most warnings are related to the caffeine content of green tea as a irritant and diuretic. Side effects: nervosa, insomnia, stomach trouble. It is generally considered "safe" by the World Health Organization. It appears to interact with codeine, and other plants. Also seems to affect the laboratory results for electrolysis.

Chondroitin --

is a substance commonly used as nutritional supplement or therapy ARTHROSIS.

It is also very important for the elastic body that gives tissues. Is very little studied as a nutritional supplement, but rather in combination with glucosamine in osteoarthritis therapy. But it can be administered alone. There are in summary form, or is found naturally in seaweed, shark meat, pork, chicken or beef.

Warning: - Effects of thinning the blood, thus affecting coagulation factor.

Precautions - Contraindicated in patients with prostate cancer. General dosage is 400 mg 3 times daily. Slow effects, while (after 3 months).

Cytocrom P-450

(CYP-450). Refers to a group of enzymes, which play an important role in drug metabolism. A live working badly (ill) may prevent drug metabolism, which is based on CYP-450. This means that the patient will receive "less" of the medicinal product. Medicines and substances that are metabolized by the same enzyme, compete with each other. That îneamnă fact that drugs in place to do good, become "poisonous". There are many drugs that are based on their metabolism by the body, pr CYP-450. Here are a list of medicines and nutritional supplements that require CYP-450: anesthetics, tranquilizers, protease inhibitors, hormones, methadone, antibiotics, painkillers, sleeping pills, lipid inhibitors, drugs for heart, diabetes, broccoli, cabbage, caffeine , cauliflower, garlic, green tea, tobacco, chamomile, ginkgo, ginseng, oregano, mint, soy oil, yucca, etc..

Coenzyme Q 10

is an enzyme produced naturally by the body, but whose production decreases with age or in cases of chronic diseases. Although not completely sure, seems to bring benefits in angina, high blood conditioned heart, Alzheimer's, migraines, breast cancer or HIV. We also believe recent research suggests that such help for chronic fatigue.

Warning: - Very rarely it may happen that transaminases increase.

Precautions - Possible side effects: nausea, vomiting, skin irritation, sleeplessness, lack of appetite, headache, sensitivity to light. Use with caution by patients suffering from diabetes, low blood pressure, thyroid disease. There is a fairly long list of drugs that interact with Coenzyme Q 10, for example. anticoagulants, diuretics, drugs to lower blood pressure and cholesterol, antipsychotics, thyroid products, vitamin E.

It seems that lower blood sugar. May influence the outcome of lab time and coagulation of thyroid values. Coenzyme Q 10 is dissolved in fat, and therefore it is recommended to be taken in capsules containing oil, and not as a pill.

Cordyceps --

- (Cordyceps sinensis). Smell is known about this fungus. In China traditionally uses CATERPILAR larvae feed. It recommended a series of problems such as fatigue, hepatitis, bronchitis, and increase efficiency in athletes or the sex. Basically there is no research on this fungus, so all recommendations are speculative.

Warning: - Effects which were not, but not surprising, because the fungus has not been scientifically studied. Being regarded as a stimulant of the immune system, should be administered with caution in patients with autoimmune diseases, ie autoimmune hepatitis, cirrhosis primary ball in combination with immunosuppressive drugs that steriode, and if patients are in therapy with Interferon!

Precautions - At present there are reports about the disadvantages and side effects. People with diabetes should be wary because Cordyceps lower blood sugar! There is no standard dosage. It is recommended to use as a fluid or powder, to avoid sources of mushrooms that have already grown larvae CATERPILAR. So attention to sources of product. China !!!!!

Turmeric --
root
yellow --

(Kurkum longa). Curcumin is extracted from the root (yellow) of the plant. The root is sometimes used as a food and spice. As food is considered safe. In Germany it is accepted as a means of regulating an upset stomach, of arthritic pain, and as energizing. Longer considered to be an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and as having anti-tumor qualities. But studies have been done only on animals. If these actions are revealed to people not yet known.
